Our Processes

CO2
The unique Hangers Cleaners carbon dioxide (CO2) cleaning technology is one of the biggest innovations in dry cleaning in more than 50 years. The patented Hangers CO2 technology is an effective, environmentally safe replacement for traditional dry cleaning processes.

Wet Clean
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Wet Cleaning is the safest professional method of "dry" cleaning. It uses the universal solvent-water-along with special computer - controlled machines such as the ones used by Hangers. The specialized detergents and conditioner used in the Wet Clean process are milder than home laudry products and are safe for most fibers and garments. Even most "dry clean only" garments can be we cleaned.

In contrast, most dry cleaners use a petroleum-based solvent called perchloroethylene, which can be very hard on fabric. Perc, as it's called, is also classified as a Toxic Air Contaminant, and is carefully regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, both in how it's used and how it's disposed of.

HOW HANGERS CLEANS

The CO2 Advantage
At the heart of Hangers CO2 technology is its fundamental difference from virtually every other commercial system available to clean clothes—the use of liquid carbon dioxide as the cleaning medium.

The list of advantages of the Hangers CO2 -based process is a lengthy one. To name just a few:

  • CO2 improves cleaning performance and is gentler on clothes. The Hangers process keeps clothes looking better, longer. Colors stay bright, fabrics stay soft, and manufacturers’ finishes remain intact through far more cleanings than with traditional processes.
  • Using CO2 eliminates hazardous waste generation, a constant by-product of many traditional methods.
  • CO2 does not pose the environmental and human health risks associated with perc (perchloroethylene), the chemical solvent used by most of the nation’s 34,000 commercial dry cleaners to clean garments. Hangers employees, customers and the environment benefit from our cleaner, more natural process.
  • Using the Hangers CO2 process lowers energy consumption.
  • Because it uses CO2, the Hangers process reduces environmental regulatory burdens for Hangers operators.

What Exactly Is Carbon Dioxide?

Carbon dioxide, or CO2 , is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless gas. It has three physical states—gas, liquid and solid.

Carbon dioxide gas is a by-product of our respiration process and is also a building block for the photosynthesis process in plants.

The solid form of CO2 is commonly known as “dry ice,” and is used in the shipping and storage of perishable goods, as well as in drama and musical productions in the “fog machines.”

The liquid state of CO2 is achieved by compressing the gas to 650 psi (pounds per square inch) pressure at ambient temperatures.

Liquid CO2 is used in decaffeinating coffee beans, and in refrigeration units and fire extinguishers. The carbonated drinks we enjoy, including sodas and seltzer water, are formed using liquid CO2 , which at room temperature becomes the fizz in your beverage as it converts again to a gas.

What Are the Sources of Carbon Dioxide?

Vast underground reservoirs of CO2 exist naturally and are good sources of the substance. Many industries generate CO2 as a by-product of their processes, such as fertilizer (ammonia) and ethanol production. Burning fossil fuels also produces CO2.

All these sources are suppliers for CO2 refineries that ultimately purify, dry and liquefy the CO2 gas. The substance, in its liquid form, is then marketed and distributed—for example, to restaurants and fast-food establishments for use in their fountain drink units—and to Hangers Cleaners.

Therefore, the CO2 that might otherwise have been released into the atmosphere becomes a valuable industry commodity.

Did you know that the majority of spots on clothes are water based and, therefore, are removed better with water? Just ask your mom how she removed all those embarrassing stains from your childhood! Water works the best and only the best cleaners have true we cleaning abilities... and Hangers is one of them.
